Tour Plan

Day 1: Fes to Merzouga – Crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains

Your adventure begins in Fes, one of Morocco’s most iconic cities. Known for its ancient medina, vibrant souks, and rich cultural heritage, Fes is the ideal starting point for your journey. After an early morning pickup from your accommodation, you’ll set off towards the Sahara Desert.

1. Scenic Drive Through the Middle Atlas Mountains

As you leave Fes, the landscape transforms into the lush greenery of the Middle Atlas Mountains. This region is famous for its cedar forests, traditional Berber villages, and stunning mountain vistas. Along the way, you’ll pass through Ifrane, often referred to as "Little Switzerland" due to its European-style architecture and cool climate. Don’t miss the chance to spot Barbary macaques in the cedar forests near Azrou.

2. Lunch in Midelt

Your next stop is Midelt, a small town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains. Known as the "Apple Capital of Morocco," Midelt is the perfect place to enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch. Take in the views of the surrounding mountains and valleys before continuing your journey.

3. Arrival in Merzouga – Gateway to the Sahara

As you approach Merzouga, the landscape shifts dramatically from lush mountains to arid desert. The sight of the towering golden dunes of the Erg Chebbi desert is truly breathtaking. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with traditional Moroccan mint tea before preparing for your desert adventure.

4. Camel Trek into the Desert

The highlight of your first day is a camel trek into the heart of the Sahara. As the sun begins to set, you’ll ride across the golden dunes, taking in the serene beauty of the desert. The rhythmic sway of the camel and the vast expanse of sand create a sense of tranquility that’s hard to match.

5. Overnight in a Berber Camp

Your camel ride ends at a traditional Berber camp, where you’ll spend the night under the stars. Enjoy a delicious Moroccan dinner, complete with tagine and couscous, while listening to the rhythmic beats of Berber music around a campfire. As the night falls, the desert sky comes alive with countless stars, offering a truly magical experience.

Day 2: Merzouga to Fes – Sunrise and Return Journey

1. Sunrise Over the Dunes

Wake up early to witness one of the most breathtaking sights of your trip—the sunrise over the Sahara Desert. The golden hues of the dunes as the sun rises are a sight you’ll never forget. After breakfast at the camp, you’ll take a short camel ride back to Merzouga village.

2. Return Journey Through the Ziz Valley

After bidding farewell to the desert, your journey back to Fes begins. The route takes you through the stunning Ziz Valley, known for its lush palm groves and dramatic gorges. This area is a stark contrast to the arid desert and offers plenty of opportunities for photos.

3. Stop in Erfoud and Midelt

On your way back, you’ll make a stop in Erfoud, a town famous for its fossil workshops. Here, you can learn about the region’s geological history and even pick up a unique souvenir. Later, you’ll enjoy lunch in Midelt before continuing your drive through the Atlas Mountains.

4. Arrival in Fes

If you’re seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, the 2 Days Desert Tour from Fes to Merzouga is the perfect getaway. The tour was well-planned, and our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. The drive through the Atlas Mountains was stunning, and the camel ride across the sand dunes was a unique experience. Spending a night in the desert under a blanket of stars was simply magical. The accommodations were comfortable, and the traditional Moroccan dinner was delicious. This tour allowed me to reconnect with nature and myself, and I couldn’t recommend it more.

The guy who took us from Fes to the desert was very kind and went beyond the expected, explaining some aspects of Moroccan culture that we had never heard of before. He was a skilled driver. At the desert camp, everyone was amazing, including the young ones who livened up the evenings. They all had a great connection with us Italians, and we had a blast singing and dancing with them. An unforgettable experience.

Highly recommended. The camp, the food, and the people are fantastic. The tents have private bathrooms, but during the summer season, it gets hot inside, which can be uncomfortable for sleeping (perhaps because the camp is located in the farthest part of the dunes, where the desert begins). However, it’s still a fantastic and comprehensive experience with various activities (camel riding, watching the sunset in the desert, sandboarding before dinner, dancing and enjoying music, stargazing, and witnessing the sunrise in the desert before breakfast). You also have the option to go on a quad ride.

I recently embarked on the 2 Days Desert Tour from Fes to Merzouga, and it was a truly immersive cultural experience. The tour allowed us to discover the rich heritage and traditions of Morocco. The drive through the beautiful landscapes of the Atlas Mountains was awe-inspiring. The camel ride through the dunes of Erg Chebbi was an adventurous and enjoyable activity. The overnight stay in a desert camp was delightful, with traditional music and dancing under the starry sky. The tour also included visits to local villages, where we had the chance to interact with the friendly locals and learn about their way of life. I highly recommend this tour for those who want to explore the desert and immerse themselves in Moroccan culture.
